Review » Zoom H2n Handy Recorder

People still depend on handy recorders for a variety of things. Whether it be students recording an important lecture or a journalist taking an audio recording of an interview, a portable voice recorder is always essential, especially if it offers a good quality audio recording. With the Zoom H2n Handy Recorder, things become even better this time with its Mid-Side recording capabilities.

The Zoom H2n is a portable voice recorder that is said to be the first in its class to offer Mid-Side recording, a technique used in film and radio for many years. It utilizes a uni-directional Mid mic for front end recording and a bi-directional Side mic to record sounds from left and right. The Side mic can be adjusted to control the width of the stereo field. The Zoom H2n is a digital recorder that comes with a 32GB SDHC to store the digital audio recording worth 50 hours in WAV or 555 hours worth of recording in the MP3 format.

The Zoom H2n Portable Recorder works with 2 AA batteries that is good for 20 hours of use. A 1.8 inch backlit display makes it easier to monitor and control the unit’s functions. The Zoom H2n Handy Recorder is available at SamsonTech for US$199.

Review » Grundig Digta 7 Premium BT Lets You Record, I Mean “Dictate”

Review » Grundig Digta 7 Premium BT Lets You Record, I Mean “Dictate”
Tape recorders are so five years ago, as you can now record audio through your smartphone. Although convenient, recording via smartphone has its disadvantages. I tried it one time during an interview and I didn’t realize that it stopped recording because it received a text message. Most of the conversation was not recorded. I know, bummer. Another issue is when using smartphones as a recording device, you still need to annotate the audio into text like what we did with tape recorders. Also, some smartphones save audio files in formats not recognizable by a lot of media players.

These problems make gadgets like Grundig’s Digta 7 Premium BT voice recorder more sensical. Dubbed as the “world’s first dictation device with a built-in Bluetooth module,” this Grundig device enables users to “dictate” (they prefer that word over “record”) and save audio files of even more than 15 minutes in duration–even smartphones cannot record audio longer than 6 minutes. The Digta 7 Premium BT can also share files wirelessly for up to 30 feet with Bluetooth-activated smartphones and PCs, as well as insert text passages within a dictation, and even utilize its speech recognition capabilities to create an alphanumeric dictation ID.

Sources of Engadget claim that the Grundig Digta 7 Premium BT is already available in the UK for £500 ($800). There will also be a BlackBerry app in the works, but it is unclear when that would be available.

NGR: Acouztic Flashlight with MP3 Player by Xceon

 Acouztic LED flashlight-MP3 player

I still do not get why this Acouztic LED flashlight-MP3 player combo by Xceon should cost $139.95. Sure it has an LEG bulb with 170 lumens, five light modes (including “disorienting strobe” and SOS signaling), a battery life of up to 40 hours, and a bulb life of 100,000 hours, but the thought of having this gadget at that cost only makes my head shake from side to side.

Could it be the waterproof speaker with surround sound system? The 3.5mm audio jack for your earphones? The rugged aircraft-grade aluminum frame? That it also comes in six colors, including champagne and gold? The company name you are wondering whether to pronounce “see-on,” “ex-shon,” or “ex-see-on”? Either way, I think a lot of us would be better off with a simple, reliable flashlight.

But if you like to part ways with your money as fast as possible, I am not stopping you.
