Five Handy Things In Case the World Went Ape Sh*t!

Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens today in theaters and from what the trailers feature, this prelude to the original movies from back in the ’60s looks pretty intense. While the older movies can still scare the sh*t out of people, this newer one is even scarier given somewhere out there, a scientist could be doing the EXACT same thing to some poor monkey right now, making the movie become a reality… While it may never happen, it doesn’t hurt to be safe. Here are some crazy ass gadgets/heavy duty weapons that will definitely come in handy if things did turn out to the way the movie depicts and we all are chased and hunted down by our primate cousins!

Five Handy Things In Case the World Went Ape Sh*t!

TASER SHOCKWAVE AREA DENIAL SYSTEM

While personal tasers and stun guns might work on humans, it might not do the trick on a 300-pound gorilla, which means you’ll need something a bit more heavy duty with a bit more gusto. This is where the TASER Shockwave system that features Taster Remote Area Denial System (TRAD) technology will come in handy. Currently only available for military or law enforcement use, the TASER Shockwave is a fully modular system, allowing complete flexibility to achieve your desired objective, meaning you can stack it horizontally, vertically, mount it on trucks, on your house, etc. With the ability to “de-escalate/defuse violent crowd/riot situations,” it looks as if I’ll be able to take down some charging primates.

Five Handy Things In Case the World Went Ape Sh*t!

BodyGuard

Created by David Brown—a cameraman, editor and producer who has filmed acts like Rage Against the Machine, Snoop Dogg and more—the BodyGuard is the ultimate protection sleeve that might work well against smaller primates that might try to mess with you. It’s equipped with a high-voltage stunner, video camera (to record and place on YouTube later), laser pointer and flashlight. (via Popsci)

Five Handy Things In Case the World Went Ape Sh*t!

QT WILDCAT 500 DKR

You’re obviously going to need some type of transportation and it better be able to handle anything you can throw at it because you’re going to have to haul ass to get away from those crazy monkeys…and the GT Wildcat 500DKR would be your best bet! Billed as a “full-blown rally raid machine,” this mean off-roader will be able to hand lots of punishment and more.

Five Handy Things In Case the World Went Ape Sh*t!

WASP KNIFE

While you may think a knife might not be such a good weapon when apes start attacking, but the WASP Knife might have you thinking otherwise. It’s a “weapon that injects a ball of compressed gas into its victim that then expands to the size of a basketball, instantly freezing and exploding their internal organs.” It’s designed to help hunters bring down large wild animals quickly…so, yeah, it just might be a good thing to have, right?

Five Handy Things In Case the World Went Ape Sh*t!

DOUBLE GLOCK MACHINE PISTOL

Of course a gun is going to be needed, so why not the two-headed monster that is the DoubleGlock Machine Pistol. It combines two fully automatic Glock 18 pistols, connects their tops so that both guns are pointed sideways, and finishes off with a scope for a good shot. (via The Firearm Blog)

Review » Madmen Arrives on Netflix, Strikes New Deal with CBS

Madmen Arrives on Netflix, Strikes New Deal with CBS

Starting today you’ll be able to enjoy the first 4 seasons of Mad Men streaming on Netflix. We originally thought the show was arriving on April 27th, but it turns out we were wrong. In fact we’re idiots, because we just didn’t read the original article correctly. But no matter, because today has arrived and Don Draper and co are here to entertain you.

On another note, Netflix struck an International deal to bring CBS content to the popular streaming service in a variety of countries. Earlier this month, Netflix announced that they’ll roll out their streaming service in a 43 countries including, but not limited to Mexico, South America and the Caribbean later this year.

Canadian subscribers, where the service most recently launched, will be able to enjoy this content this September. The content will include the CW hit “90210,” as well as past seasons of critically lauded fan favorites from SHOWTIME such as “Californication,” “Dexter,” and “The United States of Tara.”

Canadian members will also have access to a broad range of CBS library programming, including “Numb3rs,” “Sleeper Cell,” and “Twin Peaks.”

Netflix recently increased their pricing by as much as 60%. It’s said that this additional revenue will help them expand into other countries as well as improve their library of streaming movies and tv shows.

CBS AND NETFLIX ANNOUNCE INTERNATIONAL LICENSING AGREEMENT FOR CANADIAN AND LATIN AMERICAN SUBSCRIBERS

NEW YORK and BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – July 27, 2011 – CBS Corporation [NYSE: CBS.A and CBS] and Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] today announced a two-year, non-exclusive international licensing agreement that will enable certain television shows from across CBS Corporation to be streamed instantly to Netflix subscribers in Canada and Latin America. The agreement follows a separate domestic deal announced between the two companies in February. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Beginning in September, and for only $7.99 a month, Netflix members in Canada will be able to enjoy both the current and complete back seasons for CW hit “90210,” as well as past seasons of critically lauded fan favorites from SHOWTIME such as “Californication,” “Dexter,” and “The United States of Tara.” Canadian members will also have access to a broad range of CBS library programming, including “Numb3rs,” “Sleeper Cell,” and “Twin Peaks.”

Netflix announced in early July that it would be launching in 43 countries across Mexico, South America and the Caribbean later this year. Under this new deal with CBS, previous seasons of series, including “90210,” “Medium,” “Nurse Jackie,” “Californication” and “Dexter,” will be available for Latin American members to watch instantly, as will a broad range of library titles, including the original “Star Trek,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Charmed,” and “Twin Peaks.”

“We are pleased to be partners with Netflix as they rollout their superb service to new markets,” said Armando Nunez, President, CBS Studios International. “This new arrangement-which does not compete with U.S. ratings or SHOWTIME’s domestic subscriber base-underscores the popularity of CBS content around the world, and illustrates yet another meaningful way for us to realize incremental value from our vast library of content.”

“We are delighted to be expanding our successful relationship with CBS to our newer markets in Canada and Latin America,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix. “We aim to provide the widest possible range of great TV shows so our members can always find something compelling to watch wherever and whenever they want.”

Electronic Rock Guitar Bag Incorporates a Playable Guitar | Guitar Bag

ThinkGeek is no stranger to musical t-shirts.  And we’re not talking about a piece of clothing that has a bands name printed on it.  No, we’re referring to the t-shirts that actually incorporate a musical instrument, such as a guitar or drums.  We got one a while back, and while the experience was rather novel, it was still a blast to show off to friends and chicks that we wouldn’t otherwise have a chance in hell with.  However, if your school, or place of business has instituted a rather stringent dress code your gonna be SOL when it comes to the aforementioned clothing.  But alas, their is a bastion of relief, the Electronic Rock Guitar Bag.

A mini amp blasts out the tunes and a set of buttons are programmed to play all the major chords.  As a result, ThinkGeek says that you’ll be able to crank out dozens of classic rock songs with very little skill.  Much like the guitar t-shirt you just strum your thumb across the fingerboard.  There is also room for a 17-inch laptop and a handful of smaller pockets for all your particulars.

Electronic Rock Guitar Bag Incorporates a Playable Guitar | Guitar Bag

Expect the Electronic Rock Guitar Bag to go on sale this August for $49.99.  However, quantities will be limited, so you may wanna sign up for their email notification as to when it’s available for purchase.

Adhoc Canoe: A Foldable Canoe
Foldable Canoe

Head off into the wilderness for a weekend retreat and you’ll probably be packing relatively light. If your destination includes a body of water chances are there will be a canoe on the back or roof of your car. But that’s hardly practical, especially if you can’t drive to the body of water.

Enter the Adhoc canoe. It weighs just 4.1kg (about 9lbs) and folds up to fit inside an average sized backpack. The frame is made from carbon fiber, which means that it is both strong and lightweight, while the skin it’s crafted from Aramid, the material used in body armor and racing sails. According to its designer, Tsor Design’s Ori Levin, the Adhoc Canoe can be assembled in as little as 5 minutes.

No word on when it will go into production, but we can only hope it doesn’t cost much more than your average canoe. However, since the design calls for carbon fiber and a synthetic material that probably ain’t cheap, we’re assuming it will be expensive, at least to the average consumer.

Evidence that Mac OS X Lion is around the corner, Apple has begun to accept the first applications compatible with the next home operating system. There are a few days that Apple had invited developers to submit their applications compiled with XCode 4.1 GM for validation on the Mac App Store. Thus, software WordCrasher , BusyCal , Shortcuts or Harmony Worship are fully compatible with Mac OS X Lion.

Some applications, such WordCrasher and BusyCal, also support full screen mode or the new “Recovery” only to WordCrasher, which allows you to find the application in the state it was left even after a reboot. The list of applications compatible with the new operating system from Apple is expected to grow in the coming days and should accelerate the pace right out of Mac OS X Lion.

Now those applications can be found there and you should be able to use the search box to find out more about each apps.

Review » The Elliptical Machine Office Desk Lets You Exercise While Staying Dapper

Review » The Elliptical Machine Office Desk Lets You Exercise While Staying Dapper

In the world where multitasking is king, it would be a god-send if anyone could make a workout out of sitting in front of the office desk for eight hours or so. Hammacher Schlemmer, the store of ridiculously expensive novelty items, may have something that would give us just that.

The Elliptical Machine Office Desk is a complete office that just happens to have a semi-recumbant elliptical trainer. It features a desk that can adjust its height from 27 to 47 inches with just a press of a button, enabling you to even swtich to standing mode if you prefer working that way. The elliptical trainer, meanwhile, allows you to pedal at a slower cadence, allowing you to complete that PowerPoint presentation without having to break a sweat, literally. Do this for a full work week and you can burn about 4,000 calories. There is also a performance monitor on the desk that can be electronically controlled as it monitors distance, RPM, and calories burned.

Sounds good, but with its $8,000 price tag, you are better off buying a cheaper pedaller and place it under you office desk.

Review » Mission Impossible 4, Ghost Protocol Trailer Live (video)

The first Mission Impossible movie rocked, the second sucked (thanks to the mask on/off BS) and third one was actually pretty decent.  Now, Tom and company are back for the fourth installment of the series and yesterday the first official trailer for the flick launched.  Mission Impossible 4, Ghost Protocol, positions Cruise and his team as the good/bad guys trying to clear their name – at least that’s what we could suss out from the rather disjointed trailer pasted below.  As usual, the movie is chalk full of gadgets, including a pair of gloves that enable “Ethan” to scale an all glass building, and a Microsoft Touch Surface.  We’re sure there will be plenty more, just please, no mask sequences.  It looks like Ving Rhames has been left out of this one, which is too bad, because nothing beats his baritone voice and cool cat demeanor.

Review » iCufflinks Glow to the Beat of Your Mac Inspired Heart (video)

We’ve seen some geeky cufflinks in our time, but none hold a candle to the iCufflinks. They’re finished in aluminum and as you can see are clearly an ode to the Mac computer’s on/off switch.  But that’s not all.  Hidden beneath that cold hard exterior is an LED light that can be programmed to pulsate according to your inner rhythm – it just wouldn’t be a complete package if it didn’t boast this feature.  Surprisingly they’re priced at a reasonable $128.  Did we mention that father’s day is just days away?

Review » Northstar Retro Beer Fridge
Why buy a plain old fridge when you can buy one that dispenses beer?  That’s the first question we pondered once we laid eyes on Northstar’s retro inspired fridges.

They come preinstalled with a Brew Master draft system, including through-the-door tap dispenser, coupler, connections, CO2 cylinder and drip tray.  Just add a keg of your favorite beer, tap and you’ll be able to dispense that foamy, velvety beverage like a true gentleman.  While a peek inside the fridge is no where to be found, at least online, it sounds like there is enough room to store a head of lettuce, or whatever vegetable your body requires to stave off scurvy.

Choose from three models (1950, 1951 and 1952) all starting at $800.

Review » Western Digital’s Nomad Case Encapsulates Hard Drives, Protects Against 7-foot Drops

When life gives you lemons you don’t make lemonade, you buy Western Digital‘s Nomad case.  It’s designed to protect a select number of their My Passport portable hard drives from shock, bumps and drops thanks to the tough polycarbonate exterior and soft elastomer cushion lining.  Western Digital says that with the case in place, one of their hard drives can survive a 7 foot fall to the Earth’s surface.

The case is also dust and moisture resistant, which means you can spill on it or toss it the arabian sands, though chances are the latter’s temperature will melt the drive’s internals.  They’ve also outfitted the case with an opening for a USB connector so you never have to remove the drive and there is even a molded exterior ring for hanging it from a packpack or whatever you may fancy.

Western Digital sells it direct for $30.

Review » The Power Snorkel lets Anyone Dive to 40 Feet without SCUBA Gear

The Power Snorkel is a $2500 breathing apparatus that floats on the water’s surface and let’s divers breathe under water for up to 70 minutes without the need for heavy SCUBA gear or extensive training.  It works by channeling air through a tube to the diver’s mouth.  A battery powers the flow of compressed air and is about the size of a blow up dingy.  Because the Power Snorkel floats on the water’s surface, it follows the divers as they swim beneath, providing not only oxygen but an indicator of their location.

According to the manufacturer training is minimal and is perfect for resorts, meaning that divers can dive within minutes of being introduced to the product.  One diver can achieve a depth of up to 12 meters (40 feet), while two divers just 6 meters.

Review » Backpack Umbrella

Review » Backpack Umbrella

Sometimes we wonder where Hammacher Schlemmer gets their inspiration for designing products. But in the instance of the Backpack Umbrella no pondering needed as the product clearly takes a cue from Inspector Gadget. But unfortunately unlike the cartoon character it doesn’t eject from your head, but a back pack and requires you to unzip, remove the umbrella and attach it to the pack’s built-in, adjustable support rod – the company says this only takes seconds. A set of shoulder and waist straps insure everything stays secure and when deployed it covers up to a 39 1/4″-diameter. The product is clearly marketed towards those who have too much in their hands to carry an umbrella, but then that begs the question of why not just put some of that stuff in a backpack? After all if the rain’s trajectory changes or there is a sudden gust there will be no way to compensate.

Hammacher is selling the backpack Umbrella for $40.

Review » Final Cut Pro X

Review » Final Cut Pro X
Today, Apple announced the latest installment of Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro X.  The video editing software is available now from the Mac App Store and won’t be sold in a boxed version.  A personal individual license will cost $399.99 and can be installed on multiple computers, while businesses will need to purchase a license for each machine they plan to use the software on.

So what’s new in this version of Final Cut Pro?

The Magnetic Timeline, which is a trackless approach to editing, allows you to easily move footage, arrange clips wherever you want them, all while the clips slide automatically out of the way.  There is also a Auditions feature that allows you to swap out two different versions of the edited footage to help you quickly review which is the better take.

To expedite the editing process, which is largely made up of logging clips, this version of Final Cut Pro X can automatically analyze the content.  It scans your media to dynamically organize your clips into Smart Collections, allowing you to find clips by close up, medium and wide shots as well as media type and the number of people in the shot.

Lastly, Final Cut Pro X is built for 64-bit compatible computers, taking advantage of the latest Mac hardware.  It uses multi-threaded processing and the GPU on your graphics card fast background rendering and real-time playback performance, even with 4k video.
